It is important to understand that statistically the person who lands the first strikes is more likely to win the conflict. The problem with striking first is knowing when to launch your attack and being able to justify it to your conscience and the authorities if you are forced to do so.

With pre-emptive striking you must land your strike and bypass the flinch mechanism. In order to be effective you must take a Negotiation stance as discussed previously in our Stance and Posture article You must also take notice of the warning signs of an on coming assault. For example right before a person goes physical they will start breathing faster and more shallow. Often times their skin will change color and tightness and/or there body will tense up. Their tone of voice will change and they may begin to shift their weight. It is not uncommon notice the attackers hands closed into a fist. Other things to notice are.

  • Bobbing up and down or rocking back and forth on feet (this is the bodies way to hide/ mask the initial movement of a first strike)
  • Target glace (here you will see your opponent look to where he is going to hit, or where he is going to run/escape)
  • Putting head and shin down (body wants to protect the airway, this action does so to a degree)
  • Eye brows brought forward into a frown( again the body wants to naturally protect the visual system, this action does so to a degree)
  • Stops all movements/ freezes in place
  • Dropping center or lowering of body (no different that a cat or dog getting ready to pounce)
  • Shedding cloths ( very common, you will see your attacker take his hat, coat, shirt, or bag off just prior to the assault
  • One syllable replies ( go from full sentences to one syllable replies….. reptilian brain is clicking in)
Once you notice these signs and have decide to be the first one to strike, first utilize a pattern interrupt through engaging his mind with the use of a question or distraction of some sort. Then strike, you must commit to your strike and it must be non telegraphic, it does not need to be full force but you must make sure you have control of your opponent. Under most conditions after the initial strike we will anchor to our opponent and quickly move behind them acquiring chest to back position. There we will use our opponent as a shield while we scan the area for other threats. Being behind our opponent we have access to many of his vital target and he can not stop us from attacking them if we choose.
